Palm Springs has a population of 43,000.
The Coachella Valley's population is 225,000. Our altitude is 435 feet
above sea level. The daily temperatures range from 65-95 degrees October
through May and 80-115 the rest of the year. The evenings will get down to 40
degrees in the winter and 80 degrees in the summer. Our afternoons are HOT June
thru September, but our mornings are still very pleasant and after the sun goes
down, the evenings are very comfortable. Our heat here is very dry. Relative
humidity is generally very low except for a few weeks in August.
This serene and beautiful valley was
inhabited by Indians some 10,000 years ago. It remained a paradise for
Cahuilla Indians of the Agua Caliente tribe for several hundred years. The
Indians knew the health value of the dry climate, mild temperatures, and hot
mineral waters.
In 1872, Palm Springs became a stop for
the Bradshaw Stage Coach Line between Prescott Arizona and Los Angeles. In
1877, Southern Pacific completed its railroad line through the desert. Odd
numbered sections of land for 10 miles on each side of the track became their
property while the even sections were given to the Indians. This created a
checkerboard pattern of growth. Today some of the land has been given to
individual Indians or sold. Many residential areas are built on leased land.
The Honorable Judge John Guthrie
McCallum of San Francisco arrived in 1884 with his family seeking health for
his tubercular son. He later purchased all the surrounding land from
Southern Pacific and constructed a $60,000 aqueduct. The Coachella Valley
became an important agricultural enterprise growing fruits and alfalfa.
Soon tourism flourished and Palm Springs
was becoming known as a place to relax and enjoy good health. In 1928 the
El Mirador Hotel was erected at a cost of $750,000 and provided accommodations
for 300 guests. The rich and famous would vacation here and many eventually
settled here. Celebrities from Hollywood came to this paradise to party with
their friends. Jean Harlow and Tom Nix came in the early days. Soon to follow
were the Marx Brothers, Red Skelton, Lucy, Desi, Elvis, Frank Sinatra, Marilyn
Monroe, Loretta Young, and Bing Crosby. Many more owned homes here.
Another important aspect of our history
is the classical Modernist architecture. During the late 50's and early
60's, noted architects had defined Palm Springs as a Modernist oasis. These
mid-century modern homes characteristically had flat roofs and deep overhangs.
They were designed with sleek lines and walls of glass. Albert Frey worked on
over 200 structures. Other architects include Frank Lloyd Wright, Stewart
Williams, Donald Wexler, and Richard Neutra.

Alexander, built hundreds of homes in the classical mid-century design.
They typically have tongue and groove ceilings and open floor plans and
incorporate post and beam construction. They are usually light and make great
use of the wonderful views.
Labeled the eighth wonder of the world
is the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway. A young electrical engineer by the name
of Francis Crocker began the dream in 1935. After many setbacks, work started
in 1961 and was completed in 1963. Today you can enjoy a ride to the top of Mt.
San Jacinto, which has an elevation of 10,804 feet. In 2000, the world's
largest rotating tramcars were installed that hold 80 passengers. Once at the
top you can dine, drink, cross-country ski, hike, or just plain enjoy the
breathtaking views. I enjoy going to the top late in the afternoon so I can
experience it in the day and after dark.
Today we have over 100 golf courses and
600 tennis courts. The Valley is home for the many internationally
recognized golf tournaments and tennis championships. As well as being gaming
institutions, the Casinos also host noted entertainment. The McCallum Theatre
is a cultural center for live entertainment. We have many local attractions
